Description: About the Role The General Dynamics Land Systems Summer 2025 Internship Program provides an opportunity for students looking to start or continue the transition from academia into industry. Our three-month internship assignments provide compensation based on area of study and class standing, and have the students embedded in key functional areas of our business, getting real-world experience and mentorship from experienced professionals.
The Summer Intern - Mechanical Engineering Intern role is an entry level engineering position. The Intern position is a product design and development engineering internship role within the Mobility, Survivability, & Mechanical Design Department. The charter of the Department is the design, development, verification, and implementation of all mechanical hardware and subsystems in support of the entire portfolio and programs within GDLS, ranging from new technology demonstration to pre-production development and ultimately full-scale vehicle production. This functional engineering department is organized into six individual sections broken down by specific mechanical subsystem hardware and engineering competency needs as follows:
- Power & Propulsion
- Environmental Control & Thermal Management
- Structures & Survivability
- Stowage, Mounting, & Mechanisms
- Auxiliary Systems
- Materials, Analysis, & Mechanical Labs
As a member of this functional engineering team, the Mechanical Engineer Intern will be assigned to one of these areas to assist the engineering staff with execution of the departments charter. Assignments will be designed to provide the Intern with a specific scope of work and a discrete deliverable that the intern can achieve in the prescribed duration of their employment as well as possible peripheral assignments in other sections to provide the Intern as broad an experience as possible.

Responsibilities to Anticipate for this Role Operating within cross-functional teams supporting program deliverables related to technical requirements, cost and schedule
Supporting engineering staff in the development of detail hardware concepts using CAD modeling tools and ensuring developed concepts meet all technical requirements
Collaborating with engineering peers within the project team to ensure developed concepts support a balanced system level approach that achieves the necessary performance requirements
Collaborating with drafting personnel in maturing design concepts to a production-ready state
Supporting engineering staff in the release of hardware models and prints
Providing support to the manufacturing organization in the fabrication and integration of developed hardware onto prototype and/or production platforms
Providing support, as required, for testing and verification of developed hardware
Providing support for Root Cause and Corrective Action analysis to resolve identified technical issues with prototype and/or production hardware
Assisting the engineering staff in the maintenance of laboratory facilities and equipment
Qualifications Sought Pursuing a bachelor's degree from an accredited 4-year university or college in Mechanical or Materials Science Engineering
Attained at least a sophomore status based on university/college's class standing requirements at the start of the internship.
Preferred - GPA of 3.0 or higher
Must be at least 18 years old
Must be a U.S. Person (i.e., a lawful permanent resident of the U.S.)
Must successfully pass standard pre-employment screens and must provide an official college or university transcript from their school before their first day of employment.
Must be able to complete a minimum of a full-time, 3-month assignment.
Must be able to work on-site a minimum of 3 days per week
Must be able to travel as required
Must be able to work up to 10% overtime as required
Additional Information / Desired Experience Experience with CAD modeling techniques is desired, including, but not limited to the following CAD software packages; VIS, Siemens NX and/or Creo
Familiar with MS Office applications
Possess good communication skills
