Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit The Department of Earth, Marine and Environmental Sciences ( EMES ) and the Institute of Marine Sciences at UNC -CH advances understanding of the earth and ocean processes that govern our planet, shape diverse ecosystems, sustain life, and drive environmental change. Position Summary We seek a postdoctoral researcher with experience in satellite remote sensing of water quality on a potentially NSF funded transdisciplinary project. The project aims to build decision support tools that improve planning and decision making that support cleaner rivers and more equitable river access. This position will work within a team that spans academia, government, non-profit sectors and across disciplines such as hydrology, environmental justice, and data science.
This position will 1) lead operationalizing existing remote sensing of water quality workflows and integrating water quality observations into in our collaborator’s spatial knowledge network, 2) participate in interviewing stakeholders to design key data outputs and report card indicators, 3) develop ’data vignettes’ of how remotely sense water quality data can be combined with key regulatory, river access, and socioeconomic data to improve decision making and identify opportunities for advancing equitable access to clean rivers.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Must have a Ph.D in geoscience, remote sensing, computer science, engineering, geography, or related field.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience Must have ability to program in python or R and JavaScript (within google earth engine). Must have experience working geospatial data.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience Experience with optical satellite imagery, remote sensing of water quality, machine learning for remote sensing application. Interest in remote sensing for social good, co-production with stakeholders, transdisciplinary research with across environmental justice, water management, and data infrastructure.
